Monday Mise en Place: Five French Culinary Masters To Cook For James Beard

Me and J-Ro

Me and J-Ro

It’s another day and another fundraiser for the James Beard Foundation.  This one isn’t even in Las Vegas, but it involves five guys with joints here in town, so I thought I’d give it a mention.  You may have heard of them; Alain Ducasse, Francois Payard, Joël Robuchon, Guy Savoy and Jean-Georges Vongerichten.  I guess all the good cooks were busy!  Wow, this ridiculous lineup of legendary talent will cook a multi-course meal for Culinary Liasons, the James Beard Foundations 2010 Gala dinner and silent auction.  The dinner will take place on November 10th in the Four Seasons Restaurant in New York City. It probably won’t suck.

Las Vegas is all over the Food Network these days with CityCenter playing a prominent role in The Next Iron Chef.  Last night, November 7th saw the first CityCenter-centric episode and November 14th will be the other one.  Also getting some facetime on the Food Network is The Official Face Of Las Vegas Dining, Chef Jet Tila of Wazuzu at the Encore resort.  Chef Jet and his Drunken Noodles (already featured on Tasting Las Vegas because I’m always ahead of the trends) get a nod from Giada DeLaurentiis as The Best Thing She Ever Ate With Chopsticks.  Check out The Best Thing I Ever Ate on Monday, November 8th.  Come to think of it, I don’t know if I’ve ever eaten anything better with chopsticks, either.  They’re tasty.

Alizé at the top of the Palms resort is sporting a new Mushroom Menu this November.  The menu looks like this; Chanterelle mushroom terrine with potato and leek soup featuring fresh summer truffles or roasted mushroom bisque with grilled brioche, gruyère cheese and mushroom panini or wild mushroom and beluga lentil salad with baby spinach, black truffle vinaigrette and parmesan cheese.  Next, choose a main course of either roasted portobello mushrooms with grilled beef rib-eye served with foie gras potato croustillant, parsley and a garlic béarnaise or lobster mushroom risotto with Maine lobster and herb beurre monte or sautéed salmon with porcini mushroom and cauliflower croquette with potato purée, truffle and almond brown-butter sauce or pan-roasted Cervena venison with herb and mushroom spaetzle accompanied by butternut squash and poivrade sauce.  For dessert, choose from Crème Brûlée or Soufflé Du Jour or Mascarpone Tiramisu.  The dinner rings in at $65 with $5 of that being donated to our favorite charity, Three Square.

School is in session once again at Dos Caminos at the Palazzo with their next cooking class to be held on Saturday, November 13.  Chefs Scott Linquist and Roberto Hernandez will be on hand to go over a Holiday Taco Fiesta, demonstrating how to put together a tasty taco buffet for holiday hangs at your house.  Carnitas, Chicken Tinga and Mahi Mahi will just be a few of the demos done.  There’ll also be some cocktails covered such as a Del Diablo, a 5-chile infused vodka with Passion Fruit and Rompope which is basically Mexican-style eggnog.  Cost is $65 which includes a signed copy of Chef Linquist’s Mod Mex and a whole bunch more.  For more information or to book your reservations call (702) 577-9550.

Caribbean Cooker and Ernie's, may you Rest In Peace

Touted on this very blog as one of the rising stars in The Hendo, The Caribbean Cooker and Ernie’s duplex on Stephanie and Paseo Verde has unexpectedly closed.  Thanks to a commenter, Joan, on TastingLasVegas.com for bringing it to my attention.  Sad to see it go, the place had a lot of promise and was a great addition to the area.  I’ll investigate to see what the hell happened.

Opening in December at the The Shoppes in the Palazzo is i (heart) burgers.  It’s supposed to be an actual heart as the second word, but they can blow me if they think I’m going to copy and paste a fucking heart every time I’m going write about their restaurant.  Anywho, i (heart) burgers says they will use farm-fresh ingredients and organic eggs, so I’m listening.  In the press release they also tout some unique drinks, one of which is either going to be totally heinous or totally fabulous; The Blueberry Panshake.  The Blueberry Panshake is a milkshake with blueberries, maple syrup, ice cream and…. “freshly made pancakes.”  Don’t knock it till you try it…right?  As the world awaits another burger joint….

Possibly The Best Monday Night. Ever. Tasting Las Vegas: The Tweetup. Come hang!

Can you believe we’re only a week away from The First Official Tasting Las Vegas: The Tweetup at the Naked City Pizza Shop inside MoonDoggies Bar on the corner of Desert Inn and Arville?  On Monday, November 15th, the TLV Army will descend upon one of my favorite joints in town for some great food, some great drink and an all around great hang.  I promise.  How do I back these claims up, well let me tell you!

There’s food specials.  $2 slices of pizza, The Best Buffalo-style Chicken Wings in Las Vegas will be 50 cents a piece and a Buffalo staple, Beef on Weck subs will be $2 off, bringing them to $8!  There’s drink specials.  $12 pitchers of Labatt’s and 2 for 1 Newcastle bottles.  That’s right, The TLV Army doesn’t roll with shitty beer!  Newcastle, son! Tequila Ambhar will also be on hand to further lubricate the hang.  This might be the greatest Monday night you ever have in your life!

The only thing I ask is that you please RSVP either on Facebook or on the Twtvite so we make sure we have enough food and drink on hand.  I’m looking forward to meeting all of you finally in person.  Good times guaranteed!  In summary:
