Monday Mise en Place: Stuff We Didn’t Get To From Last Week

Last week opened up with the James Beard Foundation Awards and closed with the epic parade of fabulous gluttony that is Vegas Uncork’d.  With juggling these major events, Tasting Las Vegas majorly shit the bed in coverage of some other important events that happened this past week.

First of which is the major news of the latest addition to The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas.  The venerable Jose Andres will be bringing two concepts to the resort that everyone thinks is part of CityCenter (but it ain’t); one of which is an outpost of his tapas mecca, Jaleo, and the other is a Chinese / Mexican fusion concept (General Tso’s Sopes?).  A full post about why I think this is a step in the right direction for the Cosmo should happen once I’m finished with the brewing onslaught of Vegas Uncork’d goodies.

Also, we didn’t say dick about Mothers Day, although many of our favorite restaurants were running some very fine specials.  The Wife and I took The Mother-in-Law (a.k.a. – She Who Must Be Obeyed) to RM Seafood where they weren’t running any specials, but they are special anyway.  I had the Alaskan Halibut with English Peas in a Basil Broth which now obligates me to tell everyone to stop what they are doing, go to RM Seafood and order this dish.  Fabulous.

Coinciding with Mothers Day weekend, Dos Caminos at the Palazzo resort ran another cooking class with Chefs Scott Linquist and Roberto Hernandez this past Saturday and Sunday.  One of the most fun afternoons I’ve had so far in 2010 was at the previous cooking class held at Dos Caminos (of which I talked about in this very blog), so it brings me great shame that I didn’t gush ad nauseum in the days before the event.  When the next series of cooking classes come up at Dos Caminos, I pinky swear that I’ll give you a proper heads up.

As mentioned earlier, there is an onslaught of Vegas Uncork’d posts a-brewin’ and this week will be pretty much dedicated to the sensationalized retelling of Vegas Uncork’d experiences through this here blog, Facebook, Twitter and the brand spanking new Tasting Las Vegas TV.  If you went to any of the Vegas Uncork’d events, please share some stories with us! Or, if you had some other kind of 72-hour bender this past week, tell us about that too!

I went to the Grand Tasting.. I was so in awe..celebrity chefs, gourmet food and drink as much as I wanted.. I was/am speechless..and that doesn’t happen much, let me tell ya! I felt kinda angry that someone didn’t tell me or more like seriously and passionately urge me to go to this event before this year. Hmmmm, and who should I be angry at? So it was kinda bittersweet…a wonderful amazing event but still feeling a bit bitter that I missed events like this in the past. For anyone reading this… BELIEVE ME! You really need to go to this event next year..you won’t be sorry.. as much gourmet food and drink and sightings that you can handle..prepare to be overwhelmed!!!!

  • LOL, Donna! We just started this thing back in January, so don’t blame me! ;-)

Yeah, it’s such a great event, and such a tribute to the extraordinary talent our city has in the culinary arts. It was my first year too and I will certainly never miss another one!
